The holidays aren't always as jolly as the movies make them seem. They tends to take a toll on everyone, whether it's stretching ourselves too thin financially, always being on the go and forgetting to take time for some much needed #SelfCare, or suffering from seasonal affective disorder (seasonal depression).
Here are 5 reminders to help you survive the holidays:
1.) Keep your Routine
A change in our routine can cause a lot of unwanted stress and anxiety, but we have to remember that the holiday season is just as much for us as it is for others. So stick with your routines, don't miss out on things that make you feel good. Continue to get your early morning coffee, keep up on your exercise routines and therapist visits. Your needs are equally as important as anyone else!
2.) Be Realistic
Whether we mean to or not, we all have certain expectations for the holidays, and we can easily get disappointed if things don't go according to plan. Be realistic with your expectations of others, as well as expectations for yourself. If there is something you don't want to do, don't hesitate to say no.
3.) Stay Connected
Being away from family during the holidays can be tough, but that doesn't mean you can't stay connected! Be sure to reach out via text, calling or video chat.
4.) Don't be alone (if you don't want to be)
Sometimes alone time is all we want, and other times all we want to do is be surrounded by loved ones. Know that either of those things are okay! Surround yourself with the people you want around, but if you need to take time to reset, do it!
5.) Be Good to Yourself
The most important thing you can do is speak positively to yourself, focus on your needs, take time for some much needed self care, and ask for help if you need it.
If you or a loved one needs a little extra help this holiday, that's okay! Be sure to know these resources, because you never know who or when you're going to need them.
