Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a mental health disorder that is triggered by experiencing/witnessing a terrifying event, such as a natural disaster, car accident, war/combat, sexual assault or serious injury.
• Symptoms of PTSD may start within one month of the traumatic event, but could also appear years down the road & are generally grouped into four types.
Intrusive Memory Symptoms
• Flashbacks
• Nightmares about the event
• Severe emotional distress or physical reactions to something that reminds you of the event
Avoidance Symptoms
• Trying to avoid thinking or talking about the event
• Avoiding people, places & things that remind you of the event
Negative Change Symptoms
• Negative thoughts about you or others

• Difficulty experiencing positive emotions
• Difficulty maintaining close relationships
Physical & Emotional Reaction Symptoms
• Being easily startled or frightened
• Always being on guard
• Self-destructive behaviors
• Overwhelming guilt or shame
• Aggressive behavior
• Trouble concentrating
• Insomnia
